Autism Spectrum Screening & Diagnosis by Dr. Laura Brown

Dr. Laura Brown is an autism spectrum specialist who works as a private consultant for children and with families of children impacted by autism spectrum.

Question:

How does Autism Spectrum Therapies & Treatment at the children home work and how can you expect to make progress unless you have a controlled environment?

Answer from Dr. Brown:

There are many advantages to the quality of life for the families affected by an Autism Spectrum. When the Therapies & Treatment takes place in the home, the whole family learns that yes there is hope.

I prefer to have the clientâ??s family visit my office for the first time so I can get to know their names and see how their child reacts to a new environment. It is like a doctorâ??s or counselorsâ?? offices, allowing the child a chance to meet me, see my toys, and see that I can be a fun person to play with and the child learns that I want to play. The child knows that their parents are in control and they are safe and protected.

At the next visit I go to the childâ??s home to help the parents see how their environment can be altered so that the child is not distracted. The child begins to know and to understand what they need to do to meet their parentsâ?? expectations. A lot of this has to do with a model in my office that is set up for children and I have a playground that I use. Everything is set up right from the beginning to teach the parents that their child can respond if things are displayed and arranged orderly and visually and that the structure is safe and fun.

At the childâ??s home, we sit down and I talk to the family. The child sees me again talking to their parent which establishes that I am someone who has the potential to teach them. I am also working at the same time towards play experience with the child and setting up a rapport. We sit on the floor and we do things which shows me their language and social skills, behaviors and what I can do to help them in their environment. The parents begin to bridge a natural language between themselves and their child--this helps language and social skills and improves the childâ??s behavior. More language acquisition, moving the child ahead academically, is how that all fits together but it starts with a good relationship began by playing with the child.

If you are interested in developing your childâ??s language skills, learning appropriate behaviors, and practicing social interactions, this is a chance for you to do this in a very relaxed and calm way.
