Capella University's Dr. Laura Jarrett to Chair Symposium at Upcoming APA Convention
Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) July 29, 2007 -- Dr. Laura Jarrett, associate director of training for residency programs for Capella University's Harold Abel School of Psychology, will chair a symposium on doctoral degree program residency requirements at the upcoming American Psychological Association (APA) convention to be held in San Francisco in August. The symposium, which will take place Sunday, August 19, at 8 a.m. at the Moscone Center-West in San Francisco, is titled Doctoral Program Residency Requirement--Purposes and Demonstrating Equivalence. It will focus on the two primary purposes of doctoral residencies -- student development and student assessment- and how they can be accomplished by traditional programs, as well as by distance learning and other innovative training models. Dr. Jarrett submitted the symposium concept to the APA's Division 2, the Society for the Teaching of Psychology.
"With an increasing number of non-land-based programs training graduate students in psychology, an issue the field must face is the importance and nature of face-to-face training in developing clinical skills. There are varied perspectives on this issue, and the symposium will be an important opportunity for some of those perspectives to be shared and discussed," Jarrett said.
Dr. Jarrett will be co-chairing with Dr. Michael J. Murphy, professor and director of clinical training for the department of psychology at Indiana State University. Panelists will include Dr. Marilyn Marks-Frey, core faculty for clinical psychology at Capella University; Dr. Rodney K. Goodyear, professor and associate dean for faculty with the Rossier School of Education, University of Southern California; Dr. James W. Lichtenberg, associate dean for graduate programs and research and professor of counseling psychology for the School of Education at the University of Kansas--Lawrence; Dr. Kenneth Roy, president of the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB); and Dr. Kjell Rudestam, faculty and associate dean for academic affairs for the School of Psychology at Fielding Graduate University.
