The goal of the whole experience is to encourage user participation through the creation of eCarvings (a free eCard) - the more people who participate the more the Tree of Luv will grow. "We hope we can get enough of a response and public reaction that the tree will be in full bloom well before Valentine's Day," Hines said. In the end, though, the point is going beyond Valentine's Day and encouraging people to take the time to show their love all year round.
And that's where the controversy comes in. So far, while reactions to the Tree of Luv have been positive, the campaign has encountered some anti-Valentine's Day sentiments. Criticisms range from those who feel Valentine's Day should not be saved as a result of its blatant over-commercialization. While others believe that Valentine's Day is just another day and that people shouldn't depend on an excuse to share their love. Recent feedback during a rather heated discussion on Yelp.com found many people proclaiming that their significant others are romantic all the time - and don't need a reason to show they care.
